Legal Specialization Section Civil Litigation – Shara Bajurin attended the workshop "A Day in the Life of a Court Clerk."

Legal Specialization Section Probate & Estate Planning – "Conservatorship Hot Topics: Changing Our Plans."

Legal Specialization Section Transactional Law – Shara Bajurin attended the workshop "General Overview of Corporations: LLP’s & LLC’s."

Legal Specialization Section Law Office Administration – "Become the Dominant One in Your Computer-Human Relationship." Several members attended.

Legal Specialization Section Criminal Law – "In the Hood: Gang Injunctions."

Local Association Workshop – "California Legislation and Regulatory History: a Potpourri of How-to Research Tips." Heather Ryan attended this workshop.

Chapter Achievement Workshop

LSI’s CCLS Program Workshop – Shara Bajurin attended this workshop.

BOARD OF GOVERNOR’S MEETING

Shara Bajurin attended the Board of Governor’s Meeting on behalf of SMCLSA. In addition to the special Inspirational Message of Brandon Wai, President of Alameda County LSA, and the welcome messages and introductions, there were reports (both oral and written) from the following LSI elected officers, appointed officers, and committee chairmen as follows:

President This is the beginning of Christa’s first year as LSI President, and she is warm and funny and an excellent public speaker. She makes us all look great. Her goal is to increase membership and provide educational opportunities. Christa mentioned President Carol Karwatt’s theme – Making a Difference – to encourage all the associations to set a goal.

Executive Secretary Sandra read the Resume of the Executive Committee. Comments and questions were taken at the Governor’s luncheon.

Butte County LPA
Vice President and Marketing Committee Coordinator One Legal has offered to host a live one-hour MCLE event for interested associations.

San Francisco LPA
Treasurer Mary reported that LSI’s budget is on target for the year. LSI membership is now at 1,382 as of the first quarter.

Executive Advisor and Nominations and Elections Several fundraising (ways and means) projects have been very successful, with seminars and workshops making good profits. The Inter-Club events (events organized by two or more local associations) are provided in the LSI reports. SMCLSA are encouraged to attend all other association events (we receive Chapter Achievement Points for it!!!).

Editor, The Legal Secretary SMCLSA’s deadline to submit an article for The Legal Secretary is December 1, 2008. Please let me know if you are interested in writing an article, or if you know anyone interested in writing an article. Deborah also encouraged us to send it pictures of our special events for publication in the magazine.

Educational Program Coordinator Jennifer asked us to remember to include the MCLE provider information in all programs we offer that are eligible. The 2008 Mock Exam is now available for purchase.

Historian Only 12 history or scrapbooks were presented at the Annual Conference last year. There are now 26 associations reporting that they will submit a history or scrapbook at the 2009 Annual Conference.

California Certified Legal Secretary Astrid presented a CCLS Plan, a 23-week study group for associations and students wishing to take the March 2009 CCLS Exam. SMCLSA will consider the possibility of offering this study group.

Career Promotion/Scholarship Sally asked all associations to promote the Eula Mae Jett Scholarship in mailings, personal presentations, website posts, local newspaper notices, and verbal networking.

Director of Public Relations Debra requested all associations to add the LSI tagline to all of their publications. Our own Cynthia Woodman’s picture (standing next to our marketing table) was distributed with the report as a great example of marketing at local meetings.

Professional Liaison/Day in Court Associations are encouraged to stay connected with their local bar associations.

Liaison to Law Practice Management and Technology Section of the State Bar of California The Law Practice Management and Technology Section of the State Bar of California ("LPMT") is the only section exclusively devoted to further the knowledge of its members in the law office administration, financial management, legal ethics, time management, marketing a law practice, office systems, and procedures and law office technology. The previous liaison, Yvonne Waldron-Robinson, CCLS, has become a permanent member, and a new LSI member has been appointed as our liaison.

CCLS Certifying Board The deadline to register for the October 18 CCLS Exam is September 18, 2008.

PRESIDENTS’ LUNCHEON

Carol Karwatt attended the Presidents’ Luncheon.

GOVERNORS’ LUNCHEON

Shara Bajurin attended the Governors’ Luncheon. There was an opportunity to discuss questions regarding the Resume of the Executive Committee Meeting of August 22, 2008. There was a discussion about the discount provided to local associations to use the same web designer as LSI. San Diego took advantage of the discount and is happy with their new website.

RECEPTION AND BANQUET

With so many of SMCLSA members present, it was a very fun evening being together. The entertainment was a balloon drop with a chance to win prizes. The theme was sporty and the night was warm. Everyone had a great time.

SUNDAY BRUNCH

There was no further business to conduct at this final meeting of the weekend.
